My Sewing Room

When we built our new home, my sweetheart built me a beautiful sewing room.  It's a big room, 21' x 16', it has 2 skylights, lots of shelving on the one side, with high ceilings and a high   narrow shelf on 2 walls so I can display my treasurers.  He also built me a long counter along the back wall so I would have a place to do special projects.  I have a "L" shape desk that my sewing and serger machines sit on.

Now the problem has been that this room was not only filled with bins with yardage and crafts supplies on the shelves, but it also had boxes and boxes of "Stuff" all piled on the floor and all around.

This room also has my computer station in it, so to me it is MY ROOM...... it should be my sanctuary, but instead it's was FRUSTRATION.

I would go into my room to work on my computer, or do some mending, or even do some sewing, but it wasn't pleasant because of this mess.  I would look around and just wonder to myself "What am I going to do?" and then I would just walk out and shut the door!

The first of June my sweet daughter Ann came for a visit, she was going to be here for a week.  She was excited, she loves to organize and file things, and then she said, "Mama, lets work on your sewing room, I'll help you."  I asked her if she really wanted to do that and her answered was "YES" it would be fun.  "FUN" I thought, all I could think of, was how would we make any sense of this mess??

So we started.... The first thing we did was get some fresh boxes and then we started sorting,  going though things, putting like things together, getting rid of stuff and etc.  In the evening we sat in the sun room and she filed papers and sorted more stuff, while I shredded papers and made decisions of where something needed to go.

When the week was over we had made some progress, but there was still so much more that needed to be done, but it was time for her to leave and go back to her home and her family.  Oh, how I wished she could have stayed for another week but I was so grateful to her for getting me started.

For the next few weeks I kept on working, and little by little things began to take shape.

Last Sunday at Relief Society, the sister that was giving the lesson asked if anyone had any good news they would like to share.  I almost raised my hand... I wanted to SHOUT "My Sewing Room Is Clean" I can see my floor, my counters are clear, my shelves are organize, my computer station is neat and tidy, my sewing machines are free of clutter.

My Sweetheart came into my room the other day and told me that my floor looked like a dance floor, he then took me into his arms and twirl me around my room.  He then said the room looked mighty nice.

I have a comfortable upholster rocking chair in this room.  This chair was my Mama's.   It was in her bedroom and I remember her sitting and relaxing in this ole chair.  When you sit and rock in it, it makes a clicking noise, I like to think it is singing to you.  I enjoy just going into my room now and sitting in this chair, rocking back and forth.  It brings me peace.  My mother's picture is on top of one of my bookcases, as I sit in her chair and look at her picture, I say, "How do you like my sewing room now Mama?  It's pretty comfortable, isn't it?"

Over the door I have a sign that reads, "Surround yourself with the things you love."  I do love my sewing room and I love my husband for loving me so much that he wanted me to have this beautiful room.  It's clean, it's organize and it is my sanctuary.

Cruising The California Coast

When you are planing a cruise, it seems like it takes forever for that day to come, but when it does come it seems like the days go by so fast that too soon it is over.  When you arrive home you go though a with drawl and you soon begin to dream of another cruise.  I guess you sort of get hook to this cruising thing..... I met a lady yesterday and her description of cruising was just the pleasure of being in a "luxury floating hotel."

The first part of May we took a 7 day cruise up the California Coast. This was different from the other cruises we have taken, as it was to some familiar places, not the exotic places you dream or read about.

We embarked on Saturday, May 5th, on the beautiful ship "The Sapphire Princess."  This is the same ship that we sailed to Alaska last June with our children.  We sailed out of San Pedro, the sky was over cast but beautiful.  The ocean air relaxes the soul, it's the beginning of a beautiful week, with good food, great entertainment and plenty of time to do nothing but enjoy yourself and be waited on.

Our first port was San Diego.  We walked around town a little but spent most of the time on board.  This is a Navy town and my Sweetheart did his boot training there when he was a young sailor during the Korean War.  Our next port was Ensenada.  We got off the ship just long enough to buy some vanilla and me a pretty scarf.

Our third day was at sea.  I do enjoy these days at sea.  I enjoy walking along the deck, sitting in the lounge chairs watching the waves go by or watching a movie on the large movie screen under the stars.  It also gives me the pleasure of doing my hand work which is something that I enjoy doing and is relaxing too.  But this day I'm sorry to say was cold and wet, so we sent most of this day inside the ship and not on deck.

Our forth day was in San Francisco.  Here again we took a stroll along the boardwalk.  We saw lots of Sea Lions just laying around enjoying what sun was there.  Went past a famous bakery and watch a lady making fancy breads.  The buildings along the waterfront were most interesting, but the McDonald's restaurant caught my interest the most.  That night we had the pleasure of sailing under the Golden Gate Bridge.

Day 5 was again sailing the sea.  This was a nice day and we spent a lot of the time on deck.

Our last port was Santa Barbara.  This is a beautiful town with beautiful beaches.  We did a lot of walking.  We walked to the courthouse in the center of town.  This is a beautiful old building with its beautiful gardens, tile work and the mural room.  It has a lot of history and is a must for all visitors.  Kirk and I spent our honeymoon here in this beautiful city 59 years ago, so as we stroll along I felt like a young girl again, except I did get sort of tired and then I remembered I wasn't that young girl..  We road the shuttle back to the ship for 25 cents.

Our evening dining was special.  We dined in the Vivaldi Room.  This again was the same dining room that we shared with our Children on the Alaska cruise.  This time we had a table for 4, we shared our meal with two very fine and nice looking young men.  Tom had been in the Peace Corp for a number of years and after that he had worked for the Red Cross.  Lester had been in the Navy for 14 years, he is now doing some acting which he enjoys.  Right now they were both between jobs so taking a cruise seen to be in order.  We enjoyed their company very much and looked forward to seeing them at dinner and hearing about their days activities, they both enjoyed walking and so they saw the ports on foot.  I wondered how many miles they would have logged in if they had been wearing a pedometer?  Both these young men had personality plus so sharing our evening meal with them became a delight.  They had joined the Cruise Choir so the last evening this choir put on a show in the Piazza.  We made sure we were there to enjoy their performance and to cheer them on.  We had a lovely young lady as our waitress, her name was Aumyot, she was friendly and helpful and had a welcoming smile, she always made sure I was well taken care of.  (vanilla ice cream, caramel topping with lots of walnuts)

Saturday was the end of our trip.  We had a wonderful time and we met many nice people. The only thing I missed was we did most of the sailing at night while we slept and spent the days in port, but that was OK too...   I have to admit, I do enjoy this cruising thing, it really is a "luxury floating hotel" with all the amenities.  I'm going to keep it on my MUST DO LIST....

Brandon is a Daddy

It was Tuesday night and I received a phone call from my Daughter Ann, telling me that I have a new Great Grandson.  Yes, little Reid Michael Miller was born Tuesday, April 24, 2012.  He weighted 7lbs 11 oz and his Mommie, Amanda and his Daddy, Brandon are proud and happy parents.

This makes number 25 for this Great Grandma.  A sweet little bundle of joy, to love and to hold.

Thinking about my Grandson being a Daddy just warms my heart.  Looking back over the years and thinking about the ups and downs of the journey this grandson has taken, I just smile as I picture him holding his son, this sweet little blessing straight from heaven.

Now Brandon has always been sort of a rough and tough kind of a fellow, but those who know and love him, know the special person he is and the kind and soft heart he has.

He has always been good to this Grandma, and he has always been loved by this Grandma.

I remember once his family was here for a visit.  We were having a family dinner that night and Brandon wanted to go to town.  He went, but I told him we would be having dinner at 6 and I wanted him here.  Dinner was almost ready, it was dark outside, it was getting time and we hadn't heard from Brandon, and then he walked in the house.  How did you get here I asked?  He said, I walked....  He had walked over 8 miles to get home for dinner.   He had promised me he would be here and he was.

It was just a few years ago, that he told his Mama that he was moving to Utah (he and his family lived in Arizona) she asked him why?  He said he needed to find him a wife.  So he packed all his belongings in is Car??  and moved.  He found a place to live, he found a job, he found a singles ward and in time he found his wife.

Amanda is such a sweetheart and together they make a special couple, we are so happy to have her in the family.

My Daughter and her husband arrived here at my home Wednesday night.  They spent the night and then left early the next morning to finish their trip to Lindon.  Brandon would be bringing his wife and new son home from the hospital Thursday.  My Daughter and Son-in-law would be staying with them this week helping the new Mommie and Daddy with little Reid.  My Daughter was excited about seeing her new Grandson and I'm sure he will be greeted with lots of warm hugs.

Congratulations Brandon,  Your now a Daddy....  and you'll be a good one.   We love you,  Give baby Reid a Kiss from his Great Grandma and I hope to see him soon......

Spring Time or Winter Spring ???

It was just last Sunday that we celebrated Easter.  Easter usually means the beginning of new life, for as we celebrate this special day we are remembering the Resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  It brings to mind the meaning of the Atonement and the sacrifice that Christ made for us to give us Eternal Life.  Easter is a joyful time, it is a new beginning.

Along with this special day it ushers in Springtime, and as we drove along our country road on the way to our Church services, I bask in the warmth of the morning sun and as I looked out of our car window I saw the blossoms on the many trees, just so eager to begin their bloom.  There were birds flying around and some sitting on the wires overhead or sitting on the fence post along the side of the road.  My husband commented that he has seen some bees in our garden doing their pollinating.  My heart was warm as I thought about this glorious day.

I was ready for Spring, although our winter has been mild compare to past years, it was time for the new season.  I had on a new yellow skirt with colorful dots, a pretty white blouse with a pleated ruffle around the neck and down the front, and a sunshine yellow short sleeve sweater with a lace crochet edging around the bottom.  I was wearing my pretty white high heal shoes.  My hair was fixed with a pretty yellow clip and I wore a simple pearl necklace and earrings.  I had a song in my heart as we drove along our merry way.

The rest of the day was lovely.  Our Church service was uplifting.  The testimonies were heart touching.  After our block of services we went home where I put the finishing touches on a Easter Han dinner and enjoyed our dinner with my husbands brother Lee and his wife Shirley.

This past week has been refreshing.  The sun has been out, my sweetheart has spent time getting his garden ready for planting and I have been busy in the house doing some extra cleaning.

But now, here it is Saturday,  just six days since we celebrated Easter and Springtime.

When I arose this morning, it was darker than usual.  I went to the window and looked out and what did I see?  SNOW....  Everything was covered with this white cold fluff called SNOW..  I dressed, brushed my teeth and hair, made our bed and then went to the kitchen, I fixed my breakfast, read the morning paper, did the dishes and then just sat and looked out the  window at the snow.

My sweetheart was sort of out of sort.  He read the paper, looked out the window and would pace around the house.  It was too cold and wet to go outside, even for his morning walk.  Around 11:30 he said, "Do you want to go to town ?"  Sure, why not.  So I put on my coat, little hat that warms my ears, and my SNOW shoes and I was ready to go.

We went to town, went to my sisters Leslie's for a short visit, then to Del Taco, for some tacos for lunch, down to the D.I. to see what might be new, (found some stationary supplies) then to  the Dollar Store, then to Walmart, to walk around and see what was new there and finished up by buying 2 apple pies at the McDonald's.  We then went back to our car for our trip back home.  The snow was still coming down, in beautiful flakes as we drove home, but in all it was a fun and relaxing day, not what I had expected as it is Springtime, but then I guess you can still have a Winter Spring and enjoy it too.

It's cold tonight and the snow is still coming down, so I think I'm going to turn the fireplace on, I might even have a nice cup of hot chocolate, wish you could come and join me....

Where Have I've Been?

My Daughter Marta, said to me today, "Mama, you haven't written on your Blog for a long time, how come?"  No I haven't...  So I thought about that....  and .. When I was in Arizona a couple of weeks ago, my son-in-law made the same comment to me, that I hadn't written in my Blog for sometime.   I was surprised about that, as I had no idea he was reading my blog.  So I thought about that....

It's been about 6 months since I last wrote something, maybe I haven't written because I felt I haven't really had anything to say, or maybe I'm just tired.... or maybe I just felt why bother.  But after thinking about this, I thought  OK, lets see if I can still remember how to do this, and lets see if I really have anything to say.

So what have I've been doing these past 6 months...  I guess I'll just put down a quick overview...to get started again, or at least to see if I do have something to say, and if I do, does anyone want to read it or hear about it??

I have passport, so I have done some traveling..

My sweetheart and I went to Hawaii on a 14 day cruise, which was wonderful and very relaxing.  Sailing days on the ocean blue, just him and I, no cares, no to do list, just enjoying life and leisure time.  Heaven..

I went to Germany just after Thanksgiving with my daughter Marta, for two weeks, to visit my first granddaughter Shawna and my 5 great grandchildren.  That was a dream come true. Saw wonderful sights and lots of history, and my grandchildren were so good to me.

We took another cruise, this time we went with my Daughter Marta and her husband to the Caribbean, that too was fun, relaxing and beautiful.  I can see why people love living on islands, to have a home on a tropical island as a get away, with the ocean out your front door, to walk on the beach in the moon light, peaceful feelings,.

Last we went to Arizona for 10 days for a nice visit with our daughter Ann and her husband, saw some grandkids there and 5 more great grandbabies. Did some projects, to get a head start on Christmas, and did lots of visiting.  My sweetheart was busy with our son-in-law doing male projects, like working on a car etc.

In November my sweetheart had another birthday and he reminded me that he was getting older and then I too had another birthday in February and I reminded him that I was getting older too.  When we were in Arizona we celebrated our 59th wedding anniversary, our daughter had a special dinner for us and all the grandkids and great grandkids came for this celebration.  This was nice and special as they all gave us hugs and fussed over us and made us feel loved.

I had another great grandson born this week to my grandson Jared and his sweet wife Emily and I will have two more coming in just a few months.

As I think about these last 6 months, I might have thought I had nothing to write about, but in the end I guess I really did, I just didn't take the time.   Now that's a sad thought, for when you reach this time in one's life, time becomes very precious.
